The landmark study most people cite is Yin et al., published in Metabolism in 2008. And in the same trial, berberine’s performance was statistically comparable to metformin’s.

A separate RCT from Zhang et al. that same year confirmed similar reductions, and the consistency across independent trials is one of the things that makes this more convincing than a single outlier result.
