If saffron does one thing well, it’s this.

A 2019 meta-analysis in the Journal of Affective Disorders pooled 11 randomized trials and found saffron produced a significant improvement in low mood symptoms compared to placebo, with an effect size that made me sit up. Picrocrocin provides the bitter taste and appears to contribute less to the clinical effects, though it's a useful marker of quality.
