No. Metformin lowers HbA1c by 1-2 percentage points; cinnamon's effect, where it appears at all, is a fraction of that. Cinnamon is a modest adjunct alongside medication, diet, and exercise, not a replacement for any of them.
With meals, specifically carb-containing ones. Cinnamon inhibits the digestive enzymes that break carbohydrates into glucose, which blunts the post-meal spike, but only if the cinnamon is in your gut at the same time as the food. Taking it on an empty stomach wastes that mechanism entirely.
For the glucose effect itself, both types show activity in trials. Ceylon wins on safety: cassia contains about 1% coumarin, a liver-toxic compound, and daily multi-gram cassia doses exceed the tolerable intake several times over. For long-term daily use at effective doses, Ceylon is the only sensible choice.
The practical ceiling is about 3 grams daily. Higher doses (up to 6 grams) were used safely in short trials but showed no additional glucose benefit. Above 3 grams you mainly gain side effects: mouth irritation, heartburn, and digestive upset. If you're on insulin or sulfonylureas, higher doses also raise hypoglycemia risk.
The evidence is mixed. Some trials, like Akilen's 2010 study using 2 grams daily, found HbA1c drops of around 0.8 percentage points, while the Allen meta-analysis found fasting glucose improved more reliably than HbA1c. Expect a modest effect at best, and don't judge HbA1c before 12 weeks.
The label. Look for "Cinnamomum verum" or "Cinnamomum zeylanicum." If it just says "cinnamon," assume cassia. The sticks. Ceylon quills are made of thin, papery layers rolled like a cigar, tan-brown in color. Cassia sticks are a single thick, hard curl, darker and reddish. The price. Ceylon typically runs 2-4 times the price of cassia. If it's suspiciously cheap, it's cassia.
